QAM is an RF tranmission method used by Cable companies that they use for
the tranmission of both SD and HD broadcasts.
The ATSC standard has two parts first the RF tranmission method and secondly
the video resolution formats that are to be used for digital TV.
The cable companies use the same ATSC resolution formats when they are
using the QAM RF tranmission technology.
There is no way to import decoded HD into a PC from a STB since it could
require a bandwidth of up to 1.6GB/sec.
Yes your graphics card can be limiting when receiving HD programing via an
HDTV tuner card.
Some of the Fusion HDTV tuner cards also have a QAM tuner which can be used
to get the Unencrypted QAM channels from your cable, however, when doing so
you have to use an applicatrion other than MCE.
Since the unencrypted QAM channels from your cable company are the same
channels that the HDTV tuner card can probably recieve with a small antenna
and which can then be handled by MCE there is not much benefit to using the
cards QAM tuner.

OK,
Let me understand, QAM comes into my house, QAM gets converted to both
ATSC
and NTSC after the cable box. Theoretically, if I took the DVI (or
component)out from the cable box, and ran it in to a DVI (or component) in
on
my MCE box - we'd have HD to MCE - then if I output Through DVI to my TV -
I,
in theory now, have HD on my tv, through MCE.?? (of course knowing that my
graphics card or PVR card isn't limiting the ATSC feed)?
So in summary, since I cannot find a PVR Card that supports component
cables
or DVI, (grrr), (let me know if you know of one), I cannot get HD out of
Cable?

All of the SD cable channel inputs are in NTSC(480i) format both analog
and
digital. The HD channel inputs are in ATSC resolutions trasmitted via
QAM
which is not the same as ATSC
There is no requirement that any Cable or Satellites companies transmit
IAW
ATSC RF standards since they are not tranmitting using an antenna with
FCC
assigned frequencies.
An NTSC tuner can only receive NTSC standard analog RF channels(2-99)
which
can come by antenna or by analog cable.
An ATSC tuner can only receive MPEG2 encoded/compressed digital RF
channels.
When your comcast sends output to your TV in Component or DVI/HDMI it is
sending decoded/uncompressed HD video and part of the signal using these
transports tell the TV what resolution it is receiving.
Yes a COAX cable can carry either NTSC or ATSC RF signals but if the
receiving end tuner will receive they type of signals it is designed for
just as a telephone line can transmit any lanquage, however if the
listener
does not understand Russian the talker can not speak Russian and be
understood.

So I guess the bottom line is, after the comcast box, (through
component
OR
through coax) the format is NOT ATSC (correct?) so Windows XP Media
Center
Edition will NOT interpret? Is that correct? How does my TV know that
the
feed is HD then. I thought ATSC was the new digital standard that the
US
is
pushing and all should conform.
If that is the case, in what format does Comcast HD come in as (my TV
ONLY
tells me that 720p is coming in directly from the comcast box and NOT
the
format)
I had assumed that the cable box just doesn't have a HD Tuner on the
coax
out.
But Coax should carry HD (especially in the form of ATSC OTA)
Confused...?

it outputing 480i thru coax from your comcast box then you have a non
HD
card so it only accepts 480i NTSC format. the problem isn't so much
that
MCE
won't support HD from Cable but more so that the cable conglamorate
didn't
allow to build cards that can tune HD Cable. MCE can handle HD (ATSC
format -- over the air only) res etc you just don't have a card that
will
supply it in that format. There is no cards available that will let
you
do
this at this point... Microsoft Vista will have the ability to use a
new
card that should come out in the same time frame but at this point
it's
unclear that you will be able to buy it as an addon to your current
pc..
From what I understand it will only work with Vista and will only come
on
"certified" by Cable Labs computers.

Thanks Roy.
I don't understand why not though... unless the format is different
for
HD
feeds.
When I choose a HD channel, I do get the feed, but it comes at 480i.
That
tells me that the feed "should" pass through... ??
What does the comcast box / hd tuner directly to the tv do that
media
center
won't understand?
Thanks

Mike,
MCE 2K5 only supports Over the Air HD, so the comcast HD won't
work
though
your Media Center. However, it will work on an HD tuner connected
directly
to an HD TV.
Hope this helps/

Hopefully I don't piss off too many people with this question (I
did
search a
bit before sending this, however the results that I found seem
old)
So as of 3.27.06, can I get HDTV (from Comcast - through their HD
Conversion
box) passed through MCE 2005, to my TV -(channels changed using
IR
Blaster).
The biggest problem that I see at this point is losing it from
the
Comcast
box, going to the PC running MCE. The PC has the Hauppauge 500
with
1
coaxial input, 1 svideo input, and 1 composite input - all that
"aren't
HD".
Is there a PVR type card that will keep integrity of HD the HD
feed?
I currently have the Comcast HD box connected to MCE with Coaxial
cable,
however the Motorolla box (I believe) doesn't support HD from the
Comcast /
Motorolla coaxial OUT. ??
This, I believe, is where I am losing HD feed
.
