Just an update... Bought a wireless router last night - plugged the xbox
360 into it (via powerline adaptors) and the media center straight into
it...
After much mucking about trying to get the router to provide the wireless
connection to my primary wireless modem/router... it worked! Can
recommend
the Devolo 85Mbps pwerline adaptors by the way - streaming video is
faultless. Took some effort to get the wired network on its own segmented
network, but it is working ... and long may it last (fingers crossed).

Anyway, thanks for your assistance and for pointing me in the right
direction.

If I wanted to avoid having to hard wire the router to the internet,

the following would work(?):

Xbox 360 wired to router (router being a wireless access point or
similar
device)
Media Center pc wired to router (as above)
Router (as above) connected by wireless to the broadband
modem/router
(current and wireless)

Sorry Chris, just want to ensure I get this right before I buy any
more
kit... and tonight I will also run a load of spare cable around and
hard
wire
everything to see if it will work in principle...

Here's what it sounds like you should have currently, eliminating

Router --> Internet connection, wired.
Router --> Xbox 360 with wireless connection.
Router --> MCE wired to router.

The router serves to route traffic on your Local Area Network, with

Xbox 360 and MCE PC as part of the same Workgroup, so they talk
with
each
other. I believe the default Working is MSHOME, although I would
suggest
changing that to something unique to you.

is the best, and since you'd be connecting the 360 to the
