Re: What version info is displayed in the system info if I have MC

But it really is a quirk or oversight -- it isn't sold like Office or some
other program. MS doesn't call it "Windows XP Pro with Media Center", they
call MCE an OS, they sell it that way, and not as a separate add-on like
Windows Plus. Even though we talk about MCE sitting on top of XP Pro, it
really isn't that simple because there are a few "tweaks" made to the
underlying system.

We get this question on the board repeatedly because it is a fairly
understandable mistake people would make, especially those with a little
computer knowledge; or those who have used a previous version that had the
"Windows Media Center" boot screen, why wouldn't you assume it would be
listed in the system properties? Especially, since the properties box says
"Media Center Edition".

It isn't a programming quirk. That's where the operating system (not the
Media Center Edition superset) is reported on all computers running
Windows XP. Since Media Center isn't part of a "normal" computer, and
runs on top of Windows XP, it is reported within its own environment. The
version of Office, for instance, wouldn't be reported on the System
Properties general information.

It's not a bug, just a programming quirk of the system.

MCE is just a program that runs on top of (a slightly modified version
of) XP Pro. The normal "System Properties" dialog box pokes the system to
find the OS version, which in this case is XP Pro 2002. Yes, MS probably
should have had somebody rewrite the code so when MCE is present, the
Properties would dig a little and find the version of MCE, not just the
underlying OS, but they didn't. Who knows why -- it slipped through the
cracks, it was too much work, someone was lazy, somebody screwed up, etc.
It's no big deal, just follow the previously mentioned instructions to
find the current version of MCE and stop worrying.

Yes, but it should be displayed there. Microsoft would not say it was an
issue if it was not supposed to be there. If it is only supposed to
reference
Windows XP, why would it say Media Center Edition in the Control Panel
sytem
properties?

My computer is supposed to have MCE 2005, when I checked the system
info
the
other day I noticed that it stated that I have MCE 2002.

What is supposed to be displayed in my system information if I have
MCE
2005?
