Re: disk read error

In addition to what Cari said, I'll throw in my two cents worth...

I have killed several WD hard drives - they and Maxtor seem more prone to
failure than Seagate. As a result, I will never buy anything but Seagate
now. CompUSA has 300Gb Seagates on sale this week for $99 after rebate.

If you can boot on your MCE CD and go to the recovery console, try chkdsk /p
/r. I did this a couple of times and it managed to let me boot my system OK.
However, the disk later failed permanently.

If you do have to replace the disk, I would suggest you partition about 40Gb
for drive C. Then, after you've installed the OS, go partition the rest as
D:. Then setup Media Center to use D: for all your recorded TV - that way if
you ever have to replace the OS, you still have your data on the other
partition.

hello

I have a home built mce2005 on a PCV-RX540 sony system
1.2 celron processor
512 MB SDRAM
250 GB WD hard drive
sony DVD RW+burner DRU 810A
Pioneer 16x DVD player
ATI 9600xt tv/graphics card
ATI TV wonder Elite tuner card
conected to a Vizio 32" LCD TV/monitior via vga to vga port

I have had this reoccurring problem of getting a disk read error press
CLRT+ALT+DEL to restart "4 times"
the 1st time this happened, I replaced the hard drive [same wd model]
2nd time was after I replaced some components in the system
the last 2 times I hadn't done anything to the system but a simple
restart/
turn on the system
the only thing that seems to work is to do a complete reinstall of media
center and lose all my saved programs I have tried using the windows
repair
and scan disk when you go to install the OS but it didn't seem to do
anything.
in your opinion, do I have a faulty hard drive, does WD have an issue with
this or is this an OS/software issue or something else going on
I have looked at windows articles and have found that this has happened to
other users but the solutions vary and I haven't found anything to help my
situation.

thank you in advance for any help you can provide
