Dana,

I have Symantec Client Security 2.0 with firewall active. I have put
internet addresses in the the trusterd zone to allow all machines to see all
the network
printers & share computers. I also am confused by the MCE box can't see the
2000 machines.

I hesitate getting any more XP Media Center Machines, however, until I can
clear up this mystery.

Good question...I'm reaching at straws here. I have no idea why a MCE box
couldn't even ping a Win2k box. The fact that the MCE box can ping and see
XP and Server 2003 boxes makes me wonder why 2000 is different...

I assume you're using a firewall/router box to connect it all? Or just a
switch with all boxes having hard-coded IP addresses?

Might have something to do with the firewall software on the MCE box too,
but offhand I wouldn't know what. Since most of my machines use ZoneAlarm, I
have to tell ZA that the IP address range is in the trusted zone. For the
one MCE box that uses the Windows firewall, I didn't have to do anything at
all. However, as I said, I don't have any Win2K boxes to play with...

Dana,

As I am in the XP Media Center area asking questions about connecting XP
Media Center to different Operating Systems (Win 2K), how would the Win 2K
area be able to help me as the Win 2K machines can see the XP Media Center
machines?

I have no idea there, as I don't have any 2000 PCs. As far as I know it
_should_ work...

You might want to also ask on a networking newsgroup, or a Win2K
newsgroup...

Dana,

Perhaps I am misunderstanding something about this. I can ping the XP
Pro
machines from the XP Media Center laptops. Which, as I understand it,
info
can be shared from one XP to another XP machine. However, I am unable
to
ping or recognize in any fashinon the Windows 2000 machines. XP Pro,
of
course, recognizes everything. The Windows 2003 Server recognizes
everything. The XP Media Center laptops recognize XP Pro & Windows
2003
Server. Is there a backdoor that allows the XP Media Center Machines
to
recognize the Windows 2000 machines?

The Media Center Extenders use a feature (fast user switching?) that
domains
use. You _can_ connect to a domain, either when you first install MCE
(as
you did) or later via a published hack. However, once connected to a
domain,
you can't use Extenders. You're right in that it is XP Pro underneath,
and
normally you could do everything with it that you can do with XP Pro,
with
the exception of domains and cached credentials.

The Vista versions that support Media Center functionality should be
able
to
login to domains...

When I set up this machine I connected it to my domain. Since the
machine
is
supposed to have all the features & capabilities that I should
expect
with
Windows XP, why wouldn't it connect completely to the domain?
Thanks
for
your information.

Do you have a domain or a workgroup? Media Center 2005 doesn't
support
domains or cached credentials.

If you have a workgroup, make sure all PCs have the same workgroup
name,
and
that the MCE machine's user name and password are also present on
any
machine you want to access.

I am the Network Administrator for a small company. On XP Pro &
Windows
2000
machines I can share any drives. I can only share the Windows
2003
Server
Hard Drives with the XP Media Center Laptop. When I try to
connect
to
a
Windows 2000 machine I get the error message "The mapped network
drive
could
not be created because the following error has occurred. The
account
is
not
authorized to log in from this station." Can someone help me?
