Re: MBR Error / Boot Sector Write! / Virus?

If you can boot into the Recovery Console on the CD, you can run "chkdsk
c: -mbr" and it will replace the Master Boot Record on your hard drive.
However, the fact that you also get this error on a fresh install on a new
hard drive leads me to believe you have a corrupt BIOS. I'd suggest you find
out what motherboard you have, and visit that manufacturer's web site to
download the latest BIOS flash...

My 200 GbHD continuously restarts, can't get into XP Media Center 2005.
Turned on Boot Virus Scan in Bios: "Boot Sector Write!, VIRUS: Continue
[Y/N]". Click Y and it again goes through boot procedures until windows
appears then again reboots. Click N and at top where it asks to "Press F11
to
start recovery", it shows "MBR Error". I was loading a program in for my
sign
business when this happened and because it was on the slave drive, it may
have corrupted the Drive 1 (0) C: MBR Partition Table sequential order. I
saw
another note somewhere that the BIOS or CMOS had a wrong number count. I
tried everything to get into the program so I could run the NAV program,
but
couldn't so I used the Start Up CD and no virus was found, but that
Recovery
disk was made when I got the machine from HSN last May I believe so I
didn't
have any current virus updates on that CD. Since I couldn't get any help
using the recovery disk, I decided to plug in a new drive (80 Gb Maxtor) I
had on hand for emergencies. I had a lot of trouble getting it set up but
finally did and it seems to be working after loading a few essential
programs
on it so I can do something. When I start the system up, the same screen
comes up with the Boot Sector Write!, VIRUS:..... But I only press Y to
start
up and it goes all the way, however, Norton keeps giving me this annoying
dialog about that it doesn't support recovery??? and to delete and
reinstall.
I really need my original drive with all my work programs and files so I
need
to get it back online. In the meantime I need to know if it would be safe
to
connect the 200 Gb drive up as a slave to salvage files. If the drive has
a
boot virus, will that spill over into the C: drive when I connect it to
the
system. I want to run another virus check on it with the latest updates.
Can
a virus reside in the CMOS/BIOS? What is the best way to approach this
dilemma? If the MBR can't be restored with the Recovery disk, how can it
be
fixed? Why do the same start up messages come up on a freshly installed
HD,
even though the new drive works after getting past the prompts?
