For what it's worth, commercial video tapes with MacroVision copy protection
(which is to say, most of them) cannot be copied with Media Center or with
standalone DVD Recorders. However, a little $89 gadget by FacetVideo.com
called the Video Clarifier will remove the copy protection (which is in the
vertical blanking interval) and allow those tapes to be copied. I own one,
as well as a standalone DVD recorder, and it allows me to make DVDs of my
kids (hundreds of) tapes with no problems...

A 6200 TC card with 32MB of onboard memory or a Intel 950 graphics chip
with 64 MB of memory allocated.should have about the same performance. You
get more driver options with the 6200 drivers than with the 950 drivers
however, such as overscan compensation. If you plan on adding a HDTV tuner
card then you would need a more powerful graphics card.
If you could covert a standard CRT TV designed for video to a PC monitor
designed for graphics with just a graphics card then CRT PC monitors would
not normally cost twice what the same size CRT TV cost.
You would also want a better quality graphics for video DVD then you
should get a card card such as the NVIDIA 7300SE or ATI X1300 pro since
they have excellent motion compensation support for the Decoder. This is
not a requirement for film DVDs since the odd line numbered field and the
even line number field in the interlaced input are from the same film
frame and therfore no motion compensation is required.

Let me just echo what "noozer" said about the difficulties of using MCE
for the VHS/Vinyl tasks - it isn't what MCE is designed for; when I
copied a few old VHS tapes, I just use the app that came with the
Hauppauge Tuner card rather than MCE.
That said, if you happen to find a deal on an MCE system you like, it
might be an option. You would be able to use the MCE features for the TV
stuff (and maybe to control/play other media - music, pics, etc.), but
you would need to use other separate programs in the normal XP interface
for you other tasks. You would also be getting most of the features of
XP Pro instead of Home that is typically on a system you might buy at
the store.
The other issue is how the system is viewed, if you are going to hook it
up to a standard TV, that is not really the best viewing environment for
doing anything more than simple tasks, because the res of a TV is just
too poor. Even a cheap 15" monitor will have a better res for the
standard XP desktop (it's fine for MCE, since the interface is designed
for that purpose).
So what I need is a speedy system with:
- xp pro
- a sound card
- a graphics card (does it have to be a very good one, like the nvidia
6200, or would the intel gma 950 be enough for my purposes ?)
- a tv card, like Hauppauge Tuner, with the software included (is this
all I need to rip the video from the vhs tapes ?)
- hard disk, dvd burner, monitor, speakers
- what else ?
Even better:
- an mce system, if I can get a good deal (that takes care of all the
components above)
- what else ?
The other issue is how the system is viewed, if you aregoing to hook it up
to a standard TV, that is not really the best viewingenvironment for doing
anything more than simple tasks, because the res of a TVis just too poor.
I'm not sure I understand fully. Most of the time, I'll be watching the
newly made dvd's on my tv set, using my jvc dvd recorder. Do you mean to
say that I would get a better image by connecting the tv set to the
computer, using mce ? And if it's with xp pro instead, the image wouldn't
be as good ?
Another thing. I have a few commercial vhs tapes, probably
copy-protected. Shall I be able to copy them to dvd ? Am I correct in
stating that viiv has no incidence at all on that kind of copy-protection
? (That's a minor issue, let's not take it into account in constructing
my new computer system)
MCE is great for recording TV shows and can handle twotuners, so you can
record one show and watch another, or record two at once.I believe that
By saying "2 tuners", I suppose that you don't mean 2 tv cards ? (I'm
sure you don't, but think I'd better ask)
I am sure I don't understand exactly what mce is. For that reason, my
questions are probably not "to the point". Please excuse me for that.
