Hello,
I just purchased the above and have been trying to get it to work for hours,
but to no avail. I've tried all 3 suggestions in:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916179/en-us
...but it still doesn't work. Digging deeper, here is my install log dump of
what happened when I tried to install the Media Extender software on my Media
Center:

I've been getting the same dump error code every time I tried installation.
As a side note:
1. I have no 3rd party firewalls installed, and have attempted install with:
- Windows Firewall On
- then opening a number of ports, as described in one of the MS articles I
read (ports 5555, 7777, etc)
- and then the Windows Firewall Off.
2. I do not have MS Antispyware installed
3. I do have AVG Antivirus installed
4. I tried using 2 different routers - a Netgear RP614 & a belkin F5D62314.
The local network setup is as follows:
Router: 192.168.2.1
XBox: 192.168.2.99
MC: 192.168.2.2
Looking at the router log, the DHCP was able to successfully assign an IP
address to the XBox, and the XBox was able to test connect to XBox live
without a hitch.
I tried pinging the XBox from MC, but there's no response (may not be built
to respond to pings like a PC?)
As far as I know, the MC can see the router (can surf the net fine), and the
XBox can see the router (see connect to XBox live).. so it isnt a
connectivity problem (or is it?)
Also, upon searching deeper for the 1603 error code, i came across this
article:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/24/484381.aspx
I cannot uninstall KB904706 - the option simply isnt there. I manually
changed the name of the quartz.dll file, and it just messed my MC up to the
point where Videos & Radio cannot be played - I had to use a restore point.
I did not, however, do this in safe mode. The article talks about Rollup 2
problems - which is NOT what I'm having. Nevertheless, should I attempt the
rename in safe mode?
Any assistance would be great - thank you!!
~Steven
