Disk caching has been enabled for both drives.
Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 was installed in
January according to Control Panel. However, when I hit the Microsoft Update
site, it reported the following 5 software updates needed to be installed:
Update for Windows XP (KB912945)
Update for Windows XP (KB904942)
Update for Windows XP (KB912475)
Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB912024)
Update Rollup for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB 912067)
I am using 9.13 ATI Multimedia Center components.

Do you have disk caching enabled for the drives you are using for storage.
(see disk drive properties in Hardware Device Manager)?
Do you have RU2 and its updates installed?
What release of the ATI MMC components are you using?

JW,
I have one SATA 120GB Drive that contains the OS on the C:\ partition and
the storage location in another partition on the same drive. I also have
an
EIDE 120GB hard drive I use for data storage. I have tried specifying this
as
the storage location, but I get the same results. I have defragged all
hard
drives, but don't know if this will improve the situation.
When I play back the content via Media Player 10.0 I see no studdering in
the locations I see it in MCE Media Player.
I am running version 6.1 of the Catalyst driver set.
The only other thing I noted was that two of the four USB controllers are
sharing the same IRQ (16) as the video card.

If you play back a recorded program with Media Player instead of with MCE
do
you have the stuttering problem?
What release of the Catalyst drivers are you using for the diaplay part
of
your AIW card? The latest release version is 6.2?

Is anyone experiencing this problem?
Normal Live TV viewing is OK, but the playback of recorded content for
local broadcasts or other channels (Comedy Central) from cable results
in studdering/choppy video playback. The audio track plays normally, so
if you are not actually watching the video, you wouldn't think there
was
a problem. However, the video is in synch with the audio at times, and
then the video appears to freeze as the audio continues normally. Then
the video may be one or two seconds behind the audio playback for 5-10
seconds and then suddenly jumps ahead or speeds up 10X to catch back
up with the audio. This happens continuously throughout the entire
recorded program with periods of 1-2 minutes when everything is in
synch. DVD playback is fine and no other MCE issues are occurring.
Current setup:
Windows Media Center Edition 2005 (all patches and updates applied)
Dell Dimension 4600
P4 3GHz
512 MB RAM
ATI 9800PRO AIW
Samsung 26" LN-R268W
Recording in 480i (better)
