Well, buy yourself a cheap external USB drive, copy your data to
it. Use the files and settings transfer wizard to transfer your
files and settings. Install MCE and then use the files and
settings transfer wizard to re-import that data.

OK, plugged in my spare drive as the primary master and did the
file and settings transfer wizard, did a clean install of MCE,
went to the file and settings transfer wizard, pointed it to the
spare drive and got message that the file didn't contain the any
information. It's many gigabytes, it's gotta contain the proper
info!

Now what? I have a complete backup of XP but I really don't want
to revert back, neither do I want to manually build MCE back to
the point I left off with XP Pro.

I'd REALLY like to figure out how to make the file and settings
wizard recognize my file, any idea what's wrong?

Sorry, been away.

OK, you can do that. ;-)

Are you sure you're pointing at the right target? When you say
store the settings in F:/stuff, it creates a subdirectory in
F:\stuff "usmt2.unc" that has the data. When you re-import, you
have to point at f:\stuff, not "f:\stuff\usmt2.unc" or you get the
error you describe.

Yup, got the error no matter where I pointed, didn't make a bit of
difference. I created N:\Files & Settings, the wizard created the file
in there and I could point to N: or N:\Files & Settings or N:\Files &
Settings\usmt2.unc or whatever it was (I forgot but that seems correct)
and get the error.

FWIW, I could also point to F:\John Fogarty - Put Me In Coach.mp3 and
get the same error. :-)

I mentioned I'd fixed it in a later post, I restored my XP Pro
installation (thank you, MS, for ASR!) and returned the TV
tuner/capture card to Fry's. MCE and the card both said I had to buy a
new graphics card and so my MCE experiment is ended, at least for now,
I'll go beat my head against the wall for awhile with Vista 64....

I don't know how the settings and transfer wizard fouled up but I
suspect it probably was when the file was created??? Just my best
guess.

Anyway, thanks for the help, it's much appreciated.
