Re: networking xp home will not allow access

I found help for a similar problem at these web sites:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm

And
This one is excellent... even though IE browser only:
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm

Hope this works for you, like it worked for me...

Re: "I don't have passwords on any of the computers ...."

That in itself can be a problem, there is a "bug" (my definition;
Microsoft calls it a "default value") in Windows that prevents XP Pro
from accessing systems with a null administrator password.

Here's a writeup I did on this:

There is a bug in Windows XP Pro (and presumably media center) which
causes it to not allow network access to network computers that have
zero-length passwords. You may see the computer, but will get a "you do
not have permission ...." message if you actually try to access it.

To fix this:

Start / run / gpedit.msc (start the group policy editor)

Open the tree:
Computer configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings /
Local Policies / Security Options

Find the item:
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only

If this item is enabled, you will not be able to logon to other
computers on the network that have blank (zero-length) passwords. IT IS
ENABLED BY DEFAULT.

Change it to disabled.

This will fix a lot of access problems in "home" networks that don't
have user passwords on many of the machines.

This issue applies only to XP Pro (and, I think, MCE).

Yes, the Windows Firewall is checked to allow File and Printer sharing. I
don't have passwords on any of the computers so maybe I will try that. Does
the Win 98 comp need a password also? The 98 and XP pro have been sharing
without any problem and still do. Thanks

First thing I would try is making sure the Windows Firewall is allowing the
traffic through. You can either disable it or make sure it is allowing File
& Printer sharing.

Second, make sure you have passwords on all of your accounts. XP Home/Pro
is very picky about letting user accounts connect for file & printer sharing
if the accounts do not have a password.

Also be sure to check if you have another piece of firewall software
installed. Some of the Anti-Virus software also come with firewalls. If you
have something, be sure to configure it properly.

I have 3 computers networked. One is xp home, one is win 98, and one is xp

The 98 and pro have been networked and have no problem with each other. I
just recently added the xp home and it can open files from both of the other
comps., but won't allow them to access it. Says access denied. I have been
reading all networking help articles that I can find but none seem to address
this problem. I would appreciate any help!! Crlin
