RE: Hey! Microsoft! (was Re: Channels don't change correctly)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Terry-
You are a life saver! That kb article worked. I had to adjust the interval
from 100 to 425, after that, it changes the channel a little slower, but at
least it works now.
Thanks much!

Alan,

I think your issue is slightly different. I think your issue is more a
timing issue, since typing an extra digit will allow a channel change, try
looking here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896480/en-us - it may help!

The answer to your question to Mike is I have used MCE SDK and .NET to
write a dll that extracts channel change information. I then send the
information to a 3 rd Party blaster connected to a serial port. The MCE IR
Emitter has been disconnected from the back of the MCE Blaster. At the
moment it will only support a system that has one tuner installed and assumes
that the IR Blaster is connected on COM1. Hence it isn't ready for release.
I will be making some changes so that users can select what serial port to
use etc. However the IR Blaster that I am using only support NTL/Telewest
and SKY/SKY+ Boxes so wouldn't be much help to you unless the STB used the
same IR Codes.

Mike,
Do you have any more information on what Terry is doing? A Little more
information would be much appreicated.
Thanks

Hi there, this is not the issue here, although that seems to be
the response microsoft all ways provide.

If you read through the other posts in this thread you will see its
to do with the learning and reproducing of the toggle bit, the debouncing
key as far as i know is for the MCE reciever, so you can use universal remote
controls with MCE.

Turning debouncing on and off via the registry will not fix the samsung
SMC2100 issue.

Theres many posts explaining why.

For those of you still having a nightmare trying to get MCE to
control the Samsung 2100 STB you'll be glad to know there may
well be an answer to this problem very soon thanks to chap named
Terry ! :) so fingers crossed guys, looks like we dont need Microsoft
guys to fix thier own bugs when people like terry are around to clear
up after them ;)

Kind regards,
Mike

Bob,
I emailed Peter Rosser with Microsoft, this is the response i got. It should
help some
Yes, I've heard of that sort of thing. It's usually caused by "debouncing"
on the IR remote.

Here's an informative blog posting by Michael Swanson on the issue:
http://blogs.msdn.com/mswanson/archive/2004/12/01/272766.aspx

To turn off debouncing in MCE, set the EnableDebounce value to 0 in the
registry.

For Media Center 2004:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\idIr\Remotes\745a17
a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da

For Media Center 2005:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-
74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da

If you have trouble finding the key, just search for "EnableDebounce"
from HKLM.

Hope that helps,

* Peter *

Alan, I have a ticket opened with NLC TAC to have them duplicate it. They
have called me several times so I know they are working on it and hopefully
with Microsoft. If this happens with Samsung boxes also, I do believe it is
Microsofts issue. I am hoping to get this resolved on way or the other.
Lets keep bugging them.

I just talked with NextLevel TAC (Motorola), this is diffinetly an issue with
the Media Center PC, i am trying to contact microsoft of this and this is the
only route i have been able to try, i will keep trying.

OK, I'll chime in, I was also told to contact my computer manufacturer (HP)
for assistance and so I did. HP said that was the first they have heard
about it and after trying all the configuration settings I had already tried,
they then informed me to contact the manufacturer of my Set Top box. I have
now opened up a ticket with Motorola (although they are not the maker of the
box, but the owner) and will wait to here back from them. I cannot believe
Microsoft will not help out here. I am the Tech Support Engineer for Qwest
Communications for our Digital TV and would like to get this fixed so our
customer can have a more enjoyable experience. I have found a work around,
enter 3 digits for the channels... like 333 to get to channel 33, 444 will
get you to ch. 44 and so on. To get to channel 110 you would enter 1110, and
so on. But then the MMC guide will not be correct. Oh well, we'll see if
anyone responds.

Hey Wikkus, couldnt have said it better my self my friend,
and my god ive tried the last few months.

Allthough a Microsoft guy has at last joined the discussion.
you can find this, if you havnt already come accross it,
by searching for the following in the "Windows Media Center Discussion"
newsgroup.

search for : "Microsoft, please, a solution for the STB!!!!!!!" LOL

No reply to my post there yet, but hey, only posted it a few mins ago..

But we have waited long enough !!!

Sort it out MS!!! ... like, yesturday!!! else were all going the TIVO route ;)

Cheers,

This doth sucketh, mightily.

Here in the UK, NTL are a major cable service provider of both TV and
internet. Some of us don't have the freedom to install Sky (I'm not permitted
to put up a dish in my area) so any suggestions along those lines are moot.

I'd hazard a guess that there are a *large* number of people who are also
customers of this TV service, who bought/received an MCE system for Xmas,
from many and disparate vendors and are now finding that their shiny new box
doesn't work with the Samsung SMT 2100c that NTL now provide as standard.

I've searched the web and most of the hits come back here. In an earlier
thread, someone referenced Red Eye's site where they themselves state that
this interoperability issue is known to MS and that you are (alleged to) have
known about it for some not inconsiderable period.

For the unfortunate individuals affected by this issue, to be advised to
"contact your vendor" is pretty damned poor. I *will *be doing just this
myself as I too am affected by this, being the "proud" owner of a Fujitsu
Siemens Scaleo P with MCE 2005.

Given the level of feedback by people here who are, I'd hazard a guess,
predominantly IT people, anyway (I am, for one), there must be dozens if not
hundreds of less IT-literate people who are now left with a big, expensive
ornament in their living rooms and no real idea of how to proceed.

Sort it out, eh?

Hi, I just got my HP computer with media center edition 2005 and I'm having
issues with changing my channels. If I repeat channel numbers like "33", it
shows "33" in the tv windows, but my directv box shows only one "3" being
entered. So it goes to channel 3. This happens on all numbers I repeat.
"299" goes to channel "29". "300" goes to channel "30". Any ideas why?
When I start out it recongizes my setup/remote right away, but if I tell
media center that it did not change the channel correctly and I then select
to re-learn my IR, it starts off at 1 of 13 and it keeps asking my to hold
down the 1 key and release. I thought it was going to ask me for all the
other numbers, but it just asks for the "1" key. I gave up after holding
down the "1" key 20 times or so. Any help would be appricated.

thanks

There is a well known bug with MCE & Samsung cable boxes that has exactly these
symptoms. Microsoft have been aware for at least two years but he lack of a fix
so far probably indicates that one is unlikely to be forthcoming in the future.
What STB do you have?
