Re: Can't change channels

I am not sure if I am understanding the issue correctly but do you guys mean
that the IR cable with the plug should've come with the IR receiver/USB
cable. I have a built in TV tuner in my PC but also can't get the channels to
change when using my Media Center remote. I did find another IR cable that is
being described here in the original remote control set box. What do I do?

It is supposed to work the way that you are describing it, and the IR emitter
IS pointing right at it. I did flashed a flashlight to it to make sure, and
it's pointing correctly. Matter of fact, when I change channels with the STB
remote during normal TV viewing (not thru MCE), a little red light shines
where the IR receiver is, and it changes channels, so I'm sure the tuner's IR
emitter is positioned correctly, it just doesn't recognize it for whatever
reason.

(The STB signal is connected to the external tuner via an S-video cable.)

Jaime, thanks for your help, we'll see if there's someone out there that may
have experienced the same problem and can help me out.

As far as HP is concerned, I give up on those guys, they now have "tech
support" (if that's what they call it) coming from India, and they don't know
jack!

Okay, that's clarifies things, unfortunately I use (and have only set up)
desktop systems that use an internal tuner card. In these systems, there is
a USB remote receiver that plugs into the PC and the little IR emitters plug
into the back of this receiver. The way it should work is; you press the
channel up/down (or number) button on the MCE remote, MCE receives the
command (via the USB receiver), then translates that into something your STB
knows, sends the proper IR signal out to the STB, and changes the channel.

I guess with the external tuner, it functions as the tuner and remote
receiver and since it came with a prebuilt MCE system, I'll assume that is
how it is suppose to work.

How is the STB (signal) connected to the external tuner?

So, the channel changes on the PC screen, but it never changes the channel
on the STB, is that correct?

You could check to make sure the little IR emitter is pointed the right way
and is definitely over the sensor window on the STB, sometimes you need a
flashlight shining on the face to see if you are on the right spot. Some STB
have what looks like multiple windows.

I know we have several system builders here (I've only built a few systems
for friends and me); maybe someone else with experience using external
tuners will chime in with some advice. Does HP offer any support or a help
line?

Jaime,
I'm sorry that I'm not as technical as others in this forum, and I'm more
confused now, but I'm going to describe my setup below, in case you still
want to help me:

I have an HP Pavilion zd8000 notebook, 1Gb ram, ATI Mobility RADEON X600
video card with 256MB ram, and 100Gb hard disk.

The notebook came with XP MCE 2005, and an AVC 3610/HP external tuner.
The tuner connects to the notebook via USB2, and the IR thin cable
connects
from the tuner to the front of the STB (thanks for telling me what STB
means).

I only want to display tv on the notebook, (although the tuner supports
composite and s-video connections for a tv), and I'll be connecting the
notebook's audio to my home theater for surround sound, (that is after/if
I
get the channels to work first, of course.)

As I said before, I do get a tv image and sound on the notebook while I'm
trying to set MCE up, I just can't get the channels to change during the
setup.

I hope this makes sense,.

STB = Set Top Box

Did you mean the IR emitter is connect to the MCE remote reciever, not
the
tuner?

There are two ports on the back of the MCE receiver for the IR blasters,
some here have reported that changing ports into which the blaster is
plugged yielded better results.

Don't know what an STB is, but the cable signal is connected directly
to
the
cable box and the IR from the tuner is connected, and correctly
positioned,
right next to the cable box IR sensor, as the instructions call for.

Thanks !

Are you using a STB or is the signal connected directly into the tuner
card?

If using an STB (for cable, sat., etc.) are you sure the IR blaster is
postioned correctly in front of the IR window on the box?

Can anybody tell me why I can't get the channels to change when
setting
up
MCE?
I go through all the steps during setup, I get the tv image to
display,
I
follow the instructions to identify my cable changer, but when it
asks
to
enter a channel, the channel won't change as its supposed to, even
though
the
channel number that I enter displays on the screen, the channel
doesn't
change. What's going on?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.
