Given that the previous possible workaround didn't do the trick,
unfortunately there isn't much else you can try. One thing that might be
worthwhile is to check for an update to your motherboard chipset drivers.
Beyond that, there's no obvious reason why this is getting stuck on your
machine - you're absolutely right in that this should just work.
Something
that would help us is if you could provide as many details as possible
regarding your PC hardware config - motherboard chipset, SATA controller
details (if SATA is enabled via a standalone chip), hard drive make/model,
etc. This way if any other users report this issue, we can check for
similarities in hardware config.

The original time I tried to install this my machine still had the
original
Dell factory install. I did format and reinstall after that but had the
same
results. At this point I would almost have to say this is a problem with
the
software package. I mean imo it should work on my configuration as every
other piece of software has. As a consumer I am very frustrated that I
have
this nice Media Center machine which I cannot use as an MCE because the
software simply won't install. Clearly I am not using a dynamic disk and
the
install just can't get past that point.

Anyway, I do appreciate your help. I am just frustrated. I am not sure
what else to do from here. Re-installing on a different disk type is not
really going to do anything to solve my problem. I need it to work on my
current configuration just like all other software I install does. It
could
prove my problem is with the SATA drives/controller but I think you are
already correct in that assumption.

Is it possible for me to remove or skip that portion of the install
checklist? That may be way too difficult but I just ask in case there is
a
command line parameter or something.

Thanks again,
Frank

Given that this is on a freshly formatted hard drive, the only thing I
can
think of (and this is a stretch) is that there's some issue with your
SATA
controller that's causing the dynamic disk check to get hung up. It's
a
pain, but you could verify this by trying to install on a PATA drive
(with
your SATA drives disconnected).

Can you delete your DvcConn.log file from c:\windows, try to add

I did try this but unfortunately it did not work. I was able to
complete
all
the steps except when I launch MCX Manager my 360 doesn't show up
in
the
list. When I choose "Add an Xbox 360" from the menu the MCX
Manager
screen
goes away and a DvcConn.exe process is thrown up and gets stuck
in
Task
Manager.

If I choose update in the MCX Manager it launches a Media Center
screen
showing my 360 Mac address, etc. So I know the media center can
see
the
360.

You may be able to bypass the normal installer package and
manually
install
the MCX software using the below steps, which are completely
unsupported
and
not generally recommended. WARNING (just in case you missed it
the
first
time): this is definitely not supported and may not work. Only
perform
these steps if you are comfortable editing your registry.

1) From Windows Update, download and install .NET 1.1/SP1 if
you
don't
already have it
2) Launch the MCX installer; once it has unpacked all of the
necessary
files
and displays the first UI screen, alt+tab to an Explorer
window,
navigate to
the temporary storage location for these files (something like
c:\<lots
of
numbers> - it shows the exact location when unpacking the
files),
and
copy
all of the files to another directory
3) Exit the MCX installer (which will delete the temp files),
navigate
to
your backup of the temp files, open the mcrdinstaller
directory,
then
locate
and run ehd.msi
4) Open regedit and append %SystemRoot%\System32\xpsp2res.dll
to
the
following key
..
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System\TermService
.. EventMessageFile = <REG_EXPAND_SZ>
5) Create the below value in your registry:
.. HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Control\Terminal
Server\Licensing Core
.. <DWORD> EnableConcurrentSessions = 1
6) Launch the MCX Manager (Start --> All Programs -->
Accessories -->
Media
Center --> Media Center Extender Manager)
7) Select your Extender, click Properties, select Remove.
8) Select File --> Add a new Extender... and type in the
8-digit
code
displayed on the TV your MCX is connected to

When I first tried to install this extender software I did
have
just
the
one
250 gb SATA drive. It is formatted as one partition (c:\)
and
it
is
NTFS.
I
have since added another 250 gb SATA drive (d:\). So both
are
formatted
as
single NTFS partitions.

A few more questions:
- How many physical hard drives do you have?
- Which drives are PATA and which are SATA?
- How are they partitioned and formatted? (all NTFS?)
- Which partition is your boot partition?

Sorry Todd, I had not noticed your post. Thank you for
the
reply!

I rebuilt my pc using my own copy of XP MCE which is from
my
MSDN
subscription. If it helps, I did use this exact same
media on
an
older
compaq to test the problem. After a rebuild the old
compaq
worked
just
fine
with the MCE software install. The only other big
difference
I
can
think
of
is the DELL I have has SATA drives and the Compaq has
IDE.

When I rebuilt the Dell the first thing I did was run all
critical
windows
updates. No other software was installed outside of
that.
Again,
on
the
older Compaq I did the same thing and it worked fine
using
my
media.
It
really appears to be something with this Dell machine but
I
cannot
figure
out
what it is for the life of me.
