Seeing your reply I wonder if your process will work as you suggest?

At the end you say "If the selection is too large, it can take care of the
compression for you."
In my experience the process will only write about an hours programme to a
DVD disc. In the terms of AVI video I have been able to write more like 8
hours of video to one disc. The trick is to be able separately to compress
DVR-MS to AVI.
