RE: Cannot solve this S/PDIF reverting to 2 speakers thing

I have the Audigy 2 ZS and I had a lot of problems getting it working
correctly too. The main problem is that this card (and I suspect other
Soundblaster cards) don't work well with non-Soundblaster components. Here's
my understanding of how you should configure your card for S/PDIF
passthrough. I'm sure you've done most if not all of this already, but here
it is in case it helps. Also, I'm using PowerDVD 5.x.

1. Go into SB Device Controls and make sure the sampling rate is 48KHz (no
sound otherwise)

2. On the SB Decoder tab, select SPDIF Passthrough

3. Go into SB Speaker Settings and select the "2/2.1 Speakers" option

4. Also select Digital Output Only (on the bottom of the same screen)

5. In Media Center, go into Settings, TV, Audio. You should only have two
options, stereo and SAP. I'm sure this setting is being picked up from the SB
config.

6. Go into General, Media Center Setup, Set Up Your Speakers. You should be
able to select 5.1 and the test sound should work. However, everytime you go
into this configuration utility, it will default to "2 speakers". I don't
know why this happens.

Then when you play HDTV content for example, it should show up as Dolby
Digital 3/2 on your receiver.

As you probably know, your receiver must be able to decode DTS for DTS DVDs
to work correctly. By the way, if you don't select S/PDIF passthrough on the
SB card, you could end up with a number of other problems such as out of
synch audio, jerky video, and random crashes. So, if you are going to change
audio cards, I don't recommend Audigy 2 ZS.

Hope this helps,

BW
