colorless video rendering? VMR9 problem?

I'm in a bind and don't know what may be causing this.
It' seems I have fully lost color inside MCE, it also happens inside *some* other video playback.

I'm not really knowledgeable re the VMR9 feature inside MCE but I assume that has something to do with it. I tried "dxdiag" tests and it shows me spinning 3D cubes colorless as well.

All of this happened because I wanted to try ATI's h/w based "Motion Adaptive De-interlacing".

Has anyone seen anything like this?
