Microsoft doesn't sell MCE... It's shipped to OEM's (or folks who get it
through shady channels). It's up to your supplier to support it, not
Microsoft.

BAD! I've seem more problems with ZoneAlarm than I can shake a stick at! Ive
seen more than 10 times the number of users with ZoneAlarm problems than
with any other protection software out there. The latest versions of Norton
(officially Symantech now) are almost just as bad. I don't know about
Staganos as I've never seen it - but if it has any funtionality similar to
ZoneAlarm, that is your second mistake - do NOT place firewalls on top of
firewalls, etc.
There are only three items you need... A good virus scanner (Free AVG does a
good job), a firewall (hardware is always better than software as software
firewalls must let the data INTO the PC before acting on it) and a spyware
scanner such as AdAware. You don't need something monitoring the space on
your harddrives, or protecting your recycle bin, or showing how much memory
is currently in use, etc.
Do a FRESH install. You could try enabling the MS firewall, but in reality,
you should get behind a hardware firewall, like a router, so folks can't get
to ports that the router won't forward - the Dlink may be able to do that.

This sounds very much like there are simply some ports being blocked by said
software or the DLink hardware. Does the DLink do NAT? Can you put your PC
into the DMZ? (if you use the DMZ, be sure to enable the MS firewall first).

I'm jumping in the middle here, but do a fresh install. Ensure that you have
some kind of firewall in place (either a router or MS firewall). Install
only what you would need to get the problem app installed - no other
updates, AV software, etc. Make sure the app works fully. Consider even not
installing hardware drivers that aren't necessary - like printer apps or
fancy mouse/keyboard drivers.
At that point you know you have a good install. Do JUST the update that you
think breaks the application. If it still works, keep installing items, one
at a time, until it breaks. Remember to reboot after each install to have
the most complete test.
My money is on something that is blocking ports, IP addresses or DNS, or a
particular protocol that is needed by your app.
