Re: Feel Duped by Microsoft with MCE NOT being allowed to join DOMAIN

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Jemima,

I run MCE 2005 in a domain environment. It works well. I suggest you keep
it and administer it separately.

Joining the MCE to the domain is not really necessary for in-home operation.
You are only losing the ability to manage MCE security centrally. And the
machine does not process the domain group policy. This means you must
tailor machine settings on MCE, not the domain controller.

My domain is hosted by Small Business Server 2003 standard. MCE is in a
workgroup which has the same name as the domain.

On MCE I shut off fast user switching and the simple file system. I enabled
file sharing on MCE and insured that it uses XP Pro style security. When a
new user joins the domain I add the user and password to MCE manually. The
password on MCE must match the domain password. Also add yourself into the
administrator group. This all allows users to access the machine as a file
and print server. I added a separate share for recorded TV. This allows me
to view recorded TV (not hi-def) on any other workstation with media player
10 and the proper Codec installed.

You can also administer the machine using remote desktop protocol, as long
as no other user is signed on.

I have a special profile called WatchTV that has no password. The system is
usually running the user interface under this profile. This profile has no
access to domain resources but does have internet access. It is set up as a
standard user, not an administrator. The downside is it cannot install
software. I have to sign on as myself to do this.

I run Trend Micro antivirus and it works well. The challenge I see for you
is keeping virus and spyware programs off the machine. You should establish
rules about this and enforce them

You will also need some help from the domain admin to get everything tuned
just right. Good luck.
