windows xp keeps restarting when I attach the 3d graphics card

I bought an inno3d GeForce4 graphics card on 29 July 2005. It worked fine for
more than 1 week until yesterday (6 August 2005), when the motherboard
sounded a beep error indicating a problem with the graphics card. I unplugged
the computer, detached and re-installed the card. There was a display on the
monitor, the Windows XP logo appeared, but after a few seconds it restarted
without going to the log-on screen. In fact it restarted several times
unceasingly without going to the log-on screen. I detached the card and tried
the onboard VGA of the motherboard; same thing. I tried uninstalling the
driver, and the OS worked normally.
What I could not understand is why my OS keeps restarting everytime I
reattach the graphics card.
Could there be a problem with the motherboard? Do I need to re-format my
hard drive? Thanks.
