Based upon some other threads I re-installed the HP Media Center Extender
software from CD and was able to connect to the Extender. Problem re-appeared
when I turned on the "other" vendors Firewall and Internet Security software.
Amazing - Turns out that McAfee Internet Security is incompatible with Media
Center 2005. Avoid it!!!
It was a firewalling issue after all, but I was unable to detect the problem
without reinstalling the Extender software from scratch as McAfee did not log
an rejects or drops from the Media Extender.
See the chat from McAfee support below...

Philip: Hi - I am running Windows Media Center 2005 with an HP x5400 Media
Extender
Philip: Mcafee Firewall and Internet Security completely kill it and cause
the extender to crash
Philip: Amazingly the McAfee error pop up appears on screen on the
Extender!!!
Val Stephenson: What is the exact error message that you are receiving?
Philip: Disabling both McAfee Firewall and internet Security fix the problem
Philip: Unauthorized window was detect while running the Media Center
Experience, 'McAfee Internet Security Alert', with file name 'C:\Program
Files\McAfee\McAfee Internet Security\GuardDog.exe'.
Philip: From eventvwr
Val Stephenson: Philip, I would be happy to help you with the Internet
Security issue using the Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Philip: Media Center with HP X5400 Media Extender
Philip: Problem is with the Extender not the PC
Philip: PC works just fine
