Trouble connecting to HP X5400 Extender

I have an HP m1050y PC running MCE 2005 and an HP X5400 extender. It worked
perfectly for the first 3 months and now I can't get the extender to connect
to the media center PC. I don't think it is a firewalling issue as I have
tried disabling all firewalling products and I still get the same issue.
However, the problem started when I remove the standard Symantec 60 day trial
software and installed another vendors product. Removing the other vendors
product and going back to Symantec did not fix the problem.
If I hard boot the extender I constantly get "contacting the media center
pc" and then a few seconds later "connecting to the media center pc".
Extender hangs here for a couple of minutes and then produces the following
long message:
The connection between the Media Center Extender and the Media Center PC was
lost due to one of the following reasons (error code: 00000002)
- the PC has been shutdown, is in standby or is hibernating. Turn the PC
back on or bring it out of standby or hibernation.
- the PC is in heavy use of is busy processing information. Try connecting
again when PC is not busy.
The extender then loops back to the "connecting to the media center pc"
message. Of course the PC is on and not doing a thing...
I can remove and re-associate the media extender using the Media Center
Extender Manager. Running the bandwidth tests show that there is plenty of
bandwidth as I am using a hard wired connection.
Checking the eventvwr I see that the extender is associating every 100
seconds or so.
However, when I do a qwinsta I can't see extender connected.
The only error message I get in the eventvwr on boot up is a UDP networking
failure.
I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
