For the price of that second network card, you could have probably gotten a
4-port router instead. You'd put this between the cable modem and your PC,
allowing both PCs to share the internet as well as network with each other.
Plus it would act as a hardware firewall. You can typically get these at
OfficeMax or CompUSA or other electronics stores on sale for maybe $20
(check your Sunday paper's insert ads).
You're getting that error because, yes, if the network adapter is connected
directly to the other PC, then there is no DHCP server anywhere around to
assign the IP address. If you want to continue this way, you'll need to
create an IP address for both PCs in the network properties for the
associated network adapters.
