In XP Pro, at the Welcome Screen, with no users logged on, press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice. You'll get the old Win2K style logon. Enter Administrator and enter any password that you might have set for this account. If in doubt, leave it blank.
Additionally, you can enable the Administrator account on the Welcome Screen (XP Pro only). To enable the Administrator account on the new Windows XP logon screen, visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP section. Follow the link for Enable Administrator Account ......
For XP Home, you must boot the computer into Safe Mode. Press the F8 key between the BIOS POST screen and XP actually starting to load. The Administrator account will appear on the Welcome Screen.

You can log into the built in Administrator account, and then delete the Index.dat and all TIF files. It will automatically be recreated. Its tough to delete Index.dat (and other files in the TIF) when you're actually logged onto the account that they're for.
