FWIW, you should not attempt to attach a debugger to any process which is
utilizing the NVIDIA decoders, as the decoders (unfortunately) have quite a
bit of debugger detection code in them and will unregister themselves and
stop functioning if they ever detect a debugger attached to them...

FYI, I have been using the NVIDIA decoders on both an ATI Radeon 9700 and
an ATI Radeon X800 for years (or months in the case of the X800), and the
only issues I ever encountered were fixed by ATI driver updates. So there
is definitely _no_ general incompatibility between NVIDIA's decoders an ATI
cards.

As to the issues you are seeing, I noticed you wrote that you had other
decoder packages installed. Some packages install quite a bit more than
just MPEG-1/2 decoders, they also install some auxiliary drivers and extra
"video post processing" filters, some of which aren't even removed when
uninstalling the package. It is at least thinkable that some of these
components may have prevented the proper function of the NVIDIA decoders on
your test machines.

If you really want to give the NVIDIA decoders a proper try on your test
machine, start with a _fresh_ install of Windows XP Media Center Edition
2005, then install the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, then the NVIDIA
decoders. _Then_ try if they work as expected...
