Is this a disconnectable wireless adapter, such as USB? If so, you should
generally install all drivers and reboot before attempting to connect the
adapter. If it goes in a slot inside the computer, then you should consult
your install manual - some cards want to be installed before their drivers,
some after.

Do you have XP drivers for your Netgear? Those should work - if not,
redownload them from the Netgear web site or contact Netgear support.
