VCR tape but not DVD?

Hello,
I am new to all this so please pardon my lack of knowledge.
My daughter read the book "Empire Falls" and saw that it was being played on
HBO so she wanted me to record it for her. I have a laptop with MCE and the
Hauppauge USB tuner on it. I recorded it fine to the hard drive on the
laptop. But when I went to burn it to DVD it wouldn't work! It said
incompatible file! I tried two other different burning software programs
(Roxio and Sonic) and no go. One of the error messages on one of the
software programs said it was copy protected and could not burn it. Since
the program airs more than once I decided to just as a fluke thing, try to
record it again from the TV to my VCR and it worked! If the reason I could
not burn it to DVD is because it is indeed copy protected and that was not
just a generic error message for some other problem, then how was I able to
record it to VCR tape? Is there something I am doing wrong in all the
burning software or is there some reason copy protected material (if that is
the case) is able to be recorded to tape but not DVD? Please help me
understand this.
TIA
