RE: Cannot install Brother HL1440 printer

After literally hours online and on the phone getting technical help from
Brother, Dell and MS newsgroups (this and the XP General site where I
started), I figured out the solution myself (the Eureka moment that can only
follow the sifting of acquired knowledge). My deceased husband's office
purchased the exact same printer when it purchased a new computer with XP
Pro. That Installation CD added my printer seamlessly to my new computer.
Conclusion:
The problem is in my Installation CD, which kept forcing me to select a
driver that does not work on XP, or else the software would install but the
printer would not be recognized. My printer was manufactured in April 2002
(I purchased it locally in August 2004), so any printers purchased prior to
at least that date will probably have a CD that will not reinstall the
printer. I wonder how many printers might have been needlessly discarded!
I have written to Brother and suggested they add this information to their
FAQs, and that they also advise how one can get an updated Installation CD.
Thank you to those who tried to help.
