Here are a couple of questions to get the diagnosis started:
1. Are you trying to install the original version (1.0), or the update
(1.01)? If you are trying to install the update, the timing of the whole
things seems to be important. I have had a similar problem, which was
remedied using my son on a walkie-talkie by the TV/Xbox, reading out the
setup key as soon as I was ready to enter that on my MCE PC. There is
apparently a really narrow window (10-15 seconds) between the time you insert
the XBox game disc and the time you need to enter the key on your MCE PC. The
way to go about this would be to install the MCX software on your PC first.
When the setup gets to the point where it prompts you for the XBox's setup
key (device ID, really), insert the "game" disk inside your Xbox. Enter the
key in your MCE PC, and that should do it. If you have your XBox in a
different room (or a different floor, as in my case), you might need help
here -- have someone stand in there to turn on (or insert the game disk
inside) the XBox. You might need a walkie-talkie, cell phone or just plain
old hollering power to get this done.
2. 90% of the problems occur from the presence of a firewall. If you have XP
SP2 firewall, I'd try disabling it before trying the install. If you have a
third-party firewall, definitely disable it.
3. If none of the above works, try uninstalling the MCE software as well as
removing the memory block occupied by your MCX "game" on the XBox. Reinstall
the whole thing as per step #1.
