You can use XP Pro as a file server, as long as you don't required domain type control over access. Application server is out, except that you can run Remote Desktop into the XP machine and run the apps just like you would terminal server. But, only one active user is allowed at a time. SQL Server will not install on XP Pro. The MSDE will, but the licensing for MSDE limits what you can do with it on a non-server platform.
