Cannot schedule custom recordings

I have an MCE box that currently cannot connect to the internet due to
networking errors. However, I would expect that I could record TV
programmes by creating a custom schedule. Unfortunately this doesn't
happen as the MCE box reports an error that no signal was found from my
TV tuner.

This puzzles me as I can view TV which is obviously being channeled
through the tuner card, and the box is recording live TV as I can
pause, rewind and play the live TV channel. The only thing I can think
of is that the MCE box requires a TV schedule to be available from the
internet to be able to set up even a custom schedule, i.e, record
channel 5 at 21:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs.

Has anyone encountered this before or do you have any insight as to why
this is happening?
