Video card drivers normally assume that displays have square pixels. If the
native resolution of your plasma is 1024x768 you have rectangular pixels
since the aspect ratio of the pixels is 4:3 and the physical aspect ratio of
the screen is 16x9 this makes the pixels are wider then they are tall
The drivers are probably sensing this native resolution which is why you are
only being offered 4:3 resolution options.
You have to use a mode in the drivers that allows you to override the
default resolution options that you are being presented.
If you can somehow tell the drivers that you have a HDTV and want to use
720p (which is close to your native resolution) the TV will make all of the
scaling required including those for the square pixels since 720p is a
standard HD video resolution.
