Trouble launching XP

I am having trouble logging into my WindowsXP home edition. When I start the
computer it loads and displays the Welcome screen where you can click on the
user(s) icon to load XP settings of that particular user. However when I
click it, it goes into the desktop but immediately comes out of it to the
welcome screen again and says logging off settings saved. I think I am
missing a dll that loads the settings of the XP. I tried running the xp in
Safe mode with an administrator account, but it still gave me the same
message and didn't go into the desktop. Moreover, I have tried running the
System Restore tool from the options in command prompt screen (screen you see
if you press F8 while starting the computer). I did not do anything. Do you
have any suggestions. Please help.
