When you boot in safe mode, what is the last driver loaded before it hangs?
MUP.SYS, by any chance? If so, there may be lots of things to try. In no
particular order, the following seems to work for some people:
Swap memory chips around - could be problem if you only have one, but if you
have two, try booting with just one (try them both).
BIOS settings - try toggling on or off the ACPI power setting. Also try
resetting BIOS to "standard settings".
USB - unplug any USB peripherals
PC Card - remove any PC cards that are in the laptop.
Failing that, get a Windows XP setup CD, boot on it. Try the "repair
console" and when you get a C: prompt, see if you can reach the floppy drive
and the directory on C with your photos.
Failing that, tell the XP setup CD to reinstall, then select the Repair
option.
I had a similar problem with my Media Center machine, and finally had to
repartition reformat and reload MCE. Fortunately, all my data was on a
separate drive so I didn't lose it.
