This symptom (black screen instead of video) is common in
multi-monitor setups, but is easy to resolve when you know why its
happening. Windows uses a technology called "Video Overlay" to render
motion video directly inside your video card. Your video player
software then simply paints a solid rectangle of a specific colour
(usually a very dark greeny/black colour) where the overlay is to be
displayed and the video card fills this area with the video feed.
The only problem with overlays is that they (generally) can only be
displayed on one monitor of a multi-monitor setup (the master, or
primary monitor) and the second monitor will instead show the
unpopulated greeny/black overlay rectangle.
If you go into your display settings, Nvidia drivers allow you to set
which monitor is the master/primary monitor - so simply set your big
screen HDTV as the primary monitor and thats where the overlay data
will be displayed .
An alternative approach to this problem is that in more recent times,
both Nvidia and ATI have incorporated technologies to allow the
overlay to be displayed on your small screen monitor, perhaps in a
small window, whilst a full-screen version is played on your large
screen monitor. In Nvidia drivers this settings are held under the
"Fullscreen Video" section of the driver - but are only available when
two monitors (or a monitor and a tv) are simultaneously attached to
your video card. My only gripe with this arrangement is that it seems
near impossible (somebody please prove me wrong - coz it's driving me
nuts) to control the resolution of the Fullscreen video playback. My
large screen monitor is being driven at a lousy 800x600 pixels using
"Fullscreen Video", whereas it runs happily at 1280x768 outside of
video playback mode.
Hope this helps,
Best Regards,
