Linksys MCE will not connect

Every once in a while I can get my Linksys Media Centre extender to work, but
if I touch anything (power off the MCX or reboot the PC) it dies (usually a
00020B08 followed by a 00000B08 error message).

I have an HP 873n Media Centre PC running MCE 2005 (upgrade provided by HP)
connected to a Linksys WRT54G (firmware v3.01.3) wireless router. At first, I
conected the MCX via a wireless connection. On my original install, I had to
remove Microsoft's antispyware and I turned off the Microsoft firewall, and
after a few tries I got it working. However, it was short lived (I think I
powered off the MCX when I went to bed and I couldn't get it to work after
that. After many hours on the phone with Linksys tech support (we tried to
re-install it several times, and upgraded the MCX firmware), they shipped me
a replacement unit . I managed to get the new MCX to work (removing MCX
software and re-installing it) but I believe it died when I powered off the
MCX or rebooted my PC.

Next I hard-wired the MCX into my WRT54G and tried a few installation
attempts, normally resulting in 00020B08 followed by a 00000B08 error message
or sometimes a 00020002 followed by a 00020B08. I have tried disabling
several of the services at bootup using msconfig (doing this I got it to work
once, but I think it was a fluke since I couldn't recreate it).

random thoughts:
I am not using PC Anywhere
I do have a Maxtor One Touch drive attached to the 873n
I have an HP 2510 all in one printer using a wireless connection that works
all the time
I have a Toshiba Tecra notebook that works on the wireless connection
(sometimes it drops my WPA connection in favour of a neighbour's non
encrypted link, I am still not sure why. I thought I solved this problem
once when I removed the Authentication on the wireless card). Normally, I use
my notebook at my desk in a docking station.

I have a 900Mhz cordless Vtech phone.
I have a microwave (not being used during these attempts)

I looked in the Computer Management utility for clues, but I am not quite
sure where I should be looking. I do not see any events that coincide with
my installation/connection attempts in the System Tools/Application, Media
Center, Security or System tabs.

On one installation attemp I had disabled the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing service in MSConfig and the software would not install
stating 'The curent configuration of the Windows Firewall is preventing a
successful connection to the Media Centre extender'.

I am stumped, it shouldn't be this hard! Any help would be appreciated.
