My suspicion is that the disconnect you're encountering is due to running
Windows off a FAT32 drive; it may sound weird, but it does make a difference
in the way that system validation works. I've only ever seen one other user
running Media Center off a FAT32 boot partition, and he encountered a
similar issue; switching to NTFS resolved the issue.
