I have exactly the same issue. I've just installed MCE 2005 on my old-ish PC
and it comes up with the error message "Video card or drivers not compatible"
when I go into Media Center. This isn't totally unexpected as the graphics
card is pretty old Radeon 7000 (I think), but I was prepared to chance it and
see if my system could handle MCE. Anyway, it also wouldn't play DVD or video
files (mainly AVI's) in the My Video either. Given the initial error message
relating to the graphic card I wasn't expecting it too, however when I go
into Media Center and go to My Videos, it shows the files and shows an actual
thumbnail of the files (which normally suggests it'll work), but when I
select one to play, it says "Files needed to display video are not installed
or not working correctly. Please restart Media Center/or restart the
computer". A similar thing happened when I tried playing a DVD. On inserting
the DVD it came up with a dialog box asking if I wanted to open the DVD in
Media Center, so I selected yes, but then I get the same "Files needed to
display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart
Media Center/or restart the computer" I got trying to view the AVI's. Yet,
both the AVI's and the DVD played in WMP10. It just seems odd that both the
files and DVD plays in WMP but not in Media Center itself?

Anyway, from reading through lots of threads today, I think think I need to
do two things. A) install a DVD decoder and B) get a new Graphics card!

With the above in mind, which DVD decoder software should I go for? WinDVD,
PowerDVD or nVidia? Also, which graphics cards should I go for. I'm not
looking to spend much money, so I guess I'm looking for the best, cheapest
compatible option to go for?
