No one can change the channel while a show is recording. Once you have the
Media Center remote programmed, you no longer use the original remote.
As for having two receivers, most satellite systems have a free four room
system. There is no decreased usability. Even then, I wonder how you'd go
about this without MCE.
I understand your reluctance to jump into a new technology, but diving into
a pool filled with happy swimmers and yelling "shark!" is not entirely
productive.
I highly recommend taking a look at the Media Center Reviewer's guide to
help you get familiar with the system. It's got very thorough information
and is littered with pictures.

the platform, if you still have ideas or things you'd like to see, post them
to the newsgroups or submit them to Microsoft as product requests.
