The message displayed on the PC does indeed suggest that it can't see the
MCX at all. This is likely due to a firewall or general networking problem;
for reference, which firewall software do you have?

Given that your firewall is disengaged, a networking issue is more likely -
do you have a cross-over cable you could use to try connecting the Media
Center directly to the Xbox? (which would isolate the both from the rest of
your network). If not, what happens if you do the following:
1) disconnect your Linksys switch from the BT router
2) reboot your PC
3) reset your Xbox
4) try running the install software again
