I built a system last May for <$1,000 US - dunno how much Canadian that is
these days.
Motherboard - MSI K8T Neo has 6 USB ports, plus FireWire, SATA, IDE. Added a
gig of RAM as 2 512M sticks. Using an AMD Athlon 64-3000. I avoided
motherboard graphics as it's a bit difficult to upgrade them <g>. Instead, I
later got an nVidia 5200 video board for $55 at NewEgg. I went with the
Hauppauge 250MCE tuner, but the new 150 is only $65 at Amazon.
Had the DVD burner moved from another system, and added a pair of existing
IDE disks - 30Gb for C and 80Gb for D. Both are 7200 rpm, 8Mb cache. Will
eventually throw on a 250Gb SATA but don't need it for now.
Everything works well together and I was able to upgrade from 2002 to 2004
to SP2 to 2005 with absolute minimum of hassles.
