BOINC is a piece of software from the Berkely University and works in the
background to process radio telemetry from their SETI project (Search for
ExtraTerrestial Life). My point is that if there's a process running in the
background that is driving the CPU to 100% then anything using Microsoft's
Background Intelligent Transfer Service seems to have problems. If your P4
has hyperthreading capabilities then it can function as two separate
processors. The setting is determined in the system BIOS and can be changed
between one cpu and hyperthreading mode by going into the bios settings at
boot time and enabling hyperthreadiing. If hyperthreading is not available or
not enabled, then I'd think any process which would drive the processor to
100% would cause problems. You can check by going into task manager and
checking cpu utilization. If it's at or near 100% while you're not doing
anything, then there's something running which may be interfering. My kids'
pc is constantly getting loaded with spyware and adware which often eats up
the cpu.
If task manager shows less than 50% while idle, then it's probably not the
problem on your machine.
One annoying part to the download error message says to "check with your
system administrator to make sure your firewall is properly configured".
Well, I'm the damn SA and I can't find any information on configuring the
firewall to support this function! Mine works just fine, by the way, behind
the firewall on my Belkin router and using McAfee Anti-Virus. with no
special settings. Haven't yet worked up the courage to enable the XP SP2
firewall and see if it works with that. Too damn happy for now just having a
guide!
