Hi all. I'm a fairly new user to MCE2005 (home-built) and my HP x5400 MCX.
Got it all working, with a minor issue I've read about here a couple of times.
The first time (since MCX was turned on/connects to MCE) I try to play any
of my protected/licensed music files (from walmart.com), I get an "Audio
Error" to the effect that my Extender's security can't be verified and
therefore will not be able to play protected content. There was a similar
thread some time ago from another user. I've got the same issue; where I get
this error, then dismiss it, then back out one screen and try to play it
again, -- it works -- every single time, in the exact same manner.
In the end, he downloaded his music files/licenses again, and that seemed to
fix the issue for him. A lot of focus was put on his network setup in that
thread, and to that end, I've also done a fair amount to try and rule it out.
I'm using a Linksys WRT54G setup with current firmware for the extender
connection, and a hardwired 100mbit connection to the MCE2005 machine.
I ran a 50foot cable from the MCX box to the Linksys router where the
MCE2005 is physically attached, to attempt to rule out the wireless network.
I shut off the wireless portion of the network and attached the cable,
reconnected the extender, and tried the music playback -- got the exact same
error and same workaround. No difference whether hardwired or wireless.
The WAN connection goes into a DSL modem, then on to the ISP. I've tried
playing protected music on the MCE2005 box with the WAN connection disabled,
and it works just fine -- the licenses are already on the MCE2005 box, and it
doesn't need the WAN connection to obtain them.
Based on this, it seems unlikely that the wireless network or the hardwired
network are to blame for this, at least in my case. The extender functions
well on the wireless connection -- I don't have any issues with playing
media, watching TV, movies, etc. The menus are all responsive.
The extender plays non-protected files (mp3 rips from CD) just fine, with no
issues of any sort. I have also tried an RDP connection from my laptop
across the wireless network, played the same protected files, etc. No
problem, no errors. Works fine.
I'd be happy to try some other troubleshooting, debugging, etc., but I'm out
of ideas. I am using the TOSLINK connection to my home theater receiver, if
that makes a difference.
I am very happy with the overall experience using this setup, just find this
issue to be annoying, and would love to figure out why it's happening. I'm
also curious just how many folks are using their extenders for protected
content like I do. It doesn't seem this error has been very widespread, and I
wonder if it's because protected music on the extender isn't very popular, or
this error is fairly rare.
Thanks for reading.
Mark
