System hookup for a cable modem

I had a new cable line installed in my computer room that I can connect
directly to my cable modem and then to my pc, however, when doing this, I
cannot watch premium channels on MCE (although I do subscribe to them). When
I add a set-top box to the mix, I loose my internet connection..

What am I doing wrong?
