Karen,

I've never worked with ShowBiz, but the problem you are having may not be
specific to that program. The 873n is a fairly powerful machine that should
not (when functioning correctly) run into buffer underrun errors. What might
cause a buffer underrun is if you have many programs running in the
background while you are burning a CD or DVD. Another possibility is that DMA
mode somehow got disabled for your hard drive controller. You can check this
by going to the Control Panel (select "Classic View" if necessary) and Choose
System, Hardware, Device Manager. Next click the "+" next to IDE ATA/ATAPI
Controllers. Next double click on both the primary, and then the secondary
IDE channel and choose advanced settings. Ensure that "DMA if available" is
selected, and that Current Transfer Mode is some type of DMA. If "DMA if
available" is selected but the Current Transfer Mode is PIO, you will need to
change this setting in your computer's BIOS. This varies a lot by
manufacturer so I may not be much help there. A third possibility for buffer
underrun errors is if the files you are burning are stored on a computer on a
network rather than on the drive of the computer that is burning the disc.

You didn't mention what messages you received when burning a DVD failed.
Does the problem occur while the disc is burning, or while ShowBiz is
"compiling" or "rendering"? If it happens during burning, try the things I
suggested above for buffer underruns. Another possibility especially with
DVDs is defective DVD media. Because of the complexity of a DVD disc, the
quality control of the media must be much higher than with CDs, and sadly
many disc manufacturers fail in this respect. I recommend either Verbatim
DataLifePlus discs, or genuine Ritek/Ridata discs. Poor quality media can
lead to errors during burn. Check www.NewEgg.com for good prices on those
media.

If the problem happens while compiling or rendering, try reinstalling
ShowBiz. If the movie you are making is based on an MPEG-2 source, like
Recorded TV, or video captured as MPEG-2 from a camcorder, then your decoder
may be the problem. The latest nVIDIA decoder has given me the most luck for
use in XP Media Center Edition. You can find a trial version by doing a
Google search for "nVIDIA decoder". You can get the full version for $20ish
for the basic package.

Another possibility is that the firmware for your DVD-burner is out of date.
Check with HP or the manufacturer of the drive (found by looking under its
properties in the Device Manager) for updated firmware. This is a very common
cause of burning problems, especially when using poor quality media.

Hope this helps, and post a reply if you can get me more info about the
errors you are receiving.
