MCE 2005 requires hardware encode cards, age is really not an issue
there. My PVR250 MCE card is a couple of years old and it's just
fine.

I would stick with the Hauppauge cards, I have not have had good
experiences with most other brands. The PVR-150MCE is particulary
good deal I think, and it works very well.

The remote I would stick to, is the MS Remote for MCE 2005:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=80-100-851&depa=0

This comes with a sensor and 2 IR bugs to control up to two receivers.
The remote itself can also learn the TV power and volume keys. The IR
sensor box connects to an USB port and receives the signals from the
remote. There are two jacks at the back of the IR sensor box where
the IR Blaster bugs connect to. They have an adhesive backing the you
peel off and then stick to the IR eye on your cable or sat receiver.

Hope this helps
