You can play the AC3 audio on your MCE PC
because your DVD Player software most likely
includes an AC3 decoder.
AC3 decoders are not free. There is a
licensing fee, so that is probably the
reason why they are not included in the
extenders.
I've run into this problem myself, and
I share your frustration. Hopefully MS
or the OEMs will offer some kind of MCX
CODEC upgrades in the future, but I don't
know if that will happen.
