TFT stands for Thin Film Technology, which most all LCDs use these days (and
most all are Active Matrix, as opposed to the old Passive Matrix). Instead,
for clarity, let's call them both LCDs - one 17" and one 30".
Now, which types of input do they have? I assume they both have VGA, and
they may both have DVI. If so, I'd forget about using the analog TV-out
(presumably sVideo). Connect the smaller of the two using VGA and the larger
of the two using DVI.
Now, once you've set your video card up to drive both, there is no switching
required - they're both active at all times. As for the video picture
pausing on one when using the desktop on the other, that would be a function
of how fast your CPU/memory/disk is, whether the disk is fragmented or not,
and what programs you may be starting up. This shouldn't affect recording
quality at all, as many people here have said they use the UI and play games
and do work while the recording happens in the background. It may
conceivably affect playback of recorded tv depending on the load on the
system.
Using an extender would give you the ability to remove the TV LCD to another
room, assuming you could reach it with a network cable or wireless.
