Test with a wired connection & confirm all is OK before banging your head
against wireless set up.

This makes no sense. The 255.255.255.0 is not a valid IP address but looks like
the Network mask. Why do you have the DNS set to the same IP address as your
laptop. Shouldn't you be getting an IP address for the laptop from the DHCP
server in the Access Point?
