Nicole,

Service Packs, like Microsoft Calls it, or service release in other vendor's
parlance, are fixes an improvements that software manufacturers release to
address outstanding issues with their products.

Microsoft -like most software manufacturers- tests their products under a
variety -yet finite number- of scenarios to make sure the product is mostly
bug free and will work consistently stable under most conditions, however,
after the product hits the market and users start stressing it, many defects
show up. Microsoft usually adress important defects via what they call "hot
fixes", that is, a small patch that solves a specific well known issue. All
defects, however, are continued to be researched and tested. At certain
point in time, they batch all those fixes, add new stuff, perhaps enhances
functionality, or newer technologies that have matured after the product was
first release, security improvement etc, in what MSFT calls "Service Pack".

Installing the latest service pack is always advisable, as it fixes many
outstanding issues and in most cases, new functionality is added. Windows XP
SP2 for example, in addition to fixing a number of defects, also tighten
security, has a much better firewall, etc.

I'd would suggest installing SP2. You mention you had a DELL 4600C. I do
have one with MC 2004 installed and I have applied SP2 without a single
problem.

I'd suggest you follow my previous post, and if after a clean installation
you still get BSOD, then like Dana mentioned, call DELL and ask them for a
new MB.

Regards,

Luis
